LIP GLOSSES AND LIP BALMS

Lip Glosses and Lip Balms

What is lip gloss?

Lip gloss is a product used primarily to give lips a glossy lustre and sometimes subtle color. It is distributed as a liquid or a soft solid. It can be completely clear, translucent, or various shades of opacity, including frosted, glittered, glassy, and metallic finishes.

Lip gloss is often used when a person wants to have some color on their lips, but does not want an intense, solid lip color effect (i.e., a more "made-up" look), as lipstick would create. Lip gloss is also often used as an introduction to makeup. It is often used by preteen and young teenage girls who want to wear some makeup, but are too young to wear more intense lipstick colors.

It can also be applied over lipstick to give extra shine just like it can be applied alone directly on the lips.

Applying Lip gloss over Lipstick

Lip gloss comes in a variety of forms and may be applied in different ways. It can be contained in a small cylindrical bottle and applied with a rounded or sloped applicator wand (known as a doefoot applicator) or with a built in lip brush.

Or it can come in a small, soft, squeezable plastic tube designed to be passed over the lips or applied with a fingertip or lip brush.

Solid or semisolid glosses come in boxes and tubes and sometimes blur the distinction between lip gloss and lip balm.

What is lip balm?

Lip balm is a wax-like substance applied topically to the lips to relieve chapped or dry lips or cold sores. Lip balm often contains beeswax or carnauba wax, camphor, cetyl alcohol, lanolin, paraffin, and petrolatum, among other ingredients. Some varieties contain dyes, flavor, fragrance, menthol, phenol, salicylic acid, and sunscreens.

The primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal moisture in lips and protect them from external exposure.

Lip balm can be applied where a finger is used to apply it to the lips, or in a lipstick-style tube from which it can be applied directly.

Difference Between Lip Gloss and Lip Balm:

Lip Balm moisturizes, protects and/or heals the lips, whereas Lip Balm gives a shiny, sparkly and/or colored look to the lips. Balm is for care and Gloss is for the look.
